At the proposal of Jimmy Daccache, Maria Doerfler, and Kevin van Bladel, Yale University has been elected as the site of the Ninth North American Syriac Symposium, to take place in 2023. Held every four years since 1991, the North American Syriac Symposium offers a special opportunity for exchange and discussion on a wide variety of topics related to Syriac: language and literature, cultural and ecclesiastical history, and cultural transmission between Syriac and neighboring domains. Chronologically, the field spans from the first centuries CE to the present day; geographically, it extends from Syriac Christianity’s homeland in the Middle East, to India, China, and the worldwide Diaspora. The event is expected to bring 100+ students and scholars from across the globe to Yale for lectures, panels, and special events related to Syriac studies.
