On Wednesday, February 12th, the Yale Center for Collaborative Arts and Media (CCAM) is hosting an exhibition curated by Aaron Peirano Garrison, entitled Scenes from Ellis Island and Stories in the Margins. The event will start at 6 PM and is part of CCAM’s ongoing Wednesday Wisdom series. This exhibition features an original film to accompany a new arrangement and recording of Ben Verdery’s Scenes from Ellis Island, as well as eight short pieces – originally commissioned in 1992 by Lou Manarino – which mirror the scene structure of Verdery’s music composition. Scenes from Ellis Island and Stories in the Margins was filmed on Ellis Island and also includes behind the scenes footage from the new recording, with vocals and lyrics by Hawa Kasse Mady Diabate. The opening night will feature composer Ben Verdery and filmmaker Aaron Peirano Garrison in conversation with Professor Yii-Jan Lin, a faculty member at the Yale Divinity School, a steering committee member of Archaia and an expert in race, religion and American immigration. The event will also include commentary by the respondent Kwadwo Adae, a New Haven artist whose mural features centrally in the film. Several of his sketches will also be on display around the center. Artists, scholars, and members of the community will join to reflect on and contemplate the complex narratives around Ellis Island and its association with the neighboring iconic Statue of Liberty. All are welcome.
