Join the Classics Department for its first Works-in-progress talk of the semester (September 13th, 4PM, Phelps 401). Professor Pauline LeVen will be presenting a new paper, ‘Hearing Greek Lyric as Music Again.’ This paper revisits methodological assumptions about the way we approach ancient Greek lyric poetry after the “performance turn.” By analyzing the aesthetic problems brought up by the myth of the origins of the nightingale song, it offers new ideas about the phenomenology of ancient Greek lyric, in what amounts to a “Philomela Manifesto.”

Please note that this first session is on a Tuesday. Future sessions will generally be on Mondays.
