The Yale Interdisciplinary Working Group for the Study of Antiquity will host its next round of presentations on Thursday, Feb. 11th at 3:30 pm in Phelps 207.  The presentations will focus on aspects of tribute and loyalty to man and God in the contexts of Ancient Egypt and Mediterranean Late Antiquity. Christina Geisen’s (Yale Dept. of Near Eastern Languages and Cultures) talk is called “The Veneration of and the Loyalty to the King During the Ancient Egyptian Old and Middle Kingdoms by Means of Basilophoric Personal Names.” And Mary Farag will tell us about “Episcopal Offering and Divine Largess: A Rereading of Bishops’ Donor Portraits in Late Antiquity.” (poster attached).

The Yale Interdisciplinary Working Group for the Study of Antiquity (YIWSA) is a forum for graduate students who take the distant past as their object of study. Once a month participants gather to hear two students from different departments give papers that serve as the basis for a broader discussion across conventional disciplinary boundaries. Our scope for the term “antiquity” (or “antiquities”) is broad: we welcome students of cultures across the globe and periods across the ages to share their approaches to the past.

As always, wine and a variety of treats will be provided. Faculty, grad students, and post-docs from all fields with an interest in antiquity are warmly invited.
