The theme of the Workshop this year is ‘Frontiers and Provinces’. Our first speaker will be Robert L. Cioffi (Dartmouth), who will offer a paper entitled “Narratives on the Edge: Roman Provinciality and Greek Novels”, with discussion to follow. A light lunch will be served.
Prof. Cioffi has kindly suggested a few readings, for those of you who wish to engage in advance with some of the primary sources that he will be discussing: parts of two Greek novels - books 3-4 of Achilles Tatius’ Leucippe and Clitophon (books 1 and 2 might offer some useful orientation, as well), and book 1 of Heliodorus’ Aethiopica - as well as one chapter of the 3rd century historian Cassius Dio, writing about the revolt of the boukoloi in Egypt (book 71, chapter 4).
